My 4 DZone experiments - Conclusions and lessons learned

My latest post was about an interesting series of experiments that I did in order to study some journalistic approaches to promote blog posts at www.dzone.com. Just a quick recap here, the principles were the following, inspired from this blog:
-Offer Freebies
-Use catchy words in the title
-Write about Google
-Write about Java or its related technologies
-Write about a new technology
-Write about DZone itself

I will fast forward to the results and conclusion of the experiments:

- The subject of the writing didn't boost my visits to the values that I was expecting BUT it generated some buzz both on DZone and on the blog itself. There are 10 interesting comments on DZone, first of them by Rick one of the site's founders. I also got 5 comments on the blog side.

- The conclusions of all these comments is very clear: Content is the King. You can use all kind of techniques to attract possible clicks but in the longer term, and I quote from Rick, "...the developer audience - they'll slice you down in a New York minute! Feed them useful content or die!". Actually, this point should be the first in everyone's list.

- This one is common sense, but I'll still mention it. Do some research and find some other places to promote your works. One of the comments woke up the detective I always wanted to be, and I did some research about the competition. You have a variety of tools to this, I used Alexa to scout what sites are linking to some popular blog posts. I'll show here just some of them and I quote again from one of my readers, WebmasterNeal: "So it all goes back to trying to find a site with a very narrow focus that is highly visited."

- If you are after DZone votes, go to http://www.dzone.com/links/buttons.jsp and incorporate their button directly in your posts. It is easier for the readers to vote (up or down) your article if you provide them an easy way to do it. Most of them will not go back to the original link just to vote it. There is also a Firefox plugin that I installed to vote the material I read. Keep in mind that not the number of votes determines your position in the ranking.

- If you are trying to report something important, on DZone or other aggregating sites, don't do it just before the weekend. My first feeling is that the largest part of the readers are using their office computers to read these sources of information.

- The higher the rank you manage to get in DZone hierarchy, more visitors you'll gain...

This is all for now, I have learned some lessons with this thing, I even made some interesting discoveries. It also gave me some great ideas about some related articles that I'll write in the future. Articles with captivating content :).

Thank you all for reading and comments.

My 4 DZone experiments or how to get from 100 to 1500 unique visitors in one week (Google Analytics proved)

,
I'm a new penman in the blogosphere but I'm reading DZone from the beginning of it and even before, JavaLobby was on my daily list of readings. After my first tech posts on my web journal, I decided to give it a try and promote my blog using DZone's services. A week later, after adding some articles, the results were not impressive but an ascending line was easy to observe, from 5-6 unique visitors per day I grew up to 20-30. I was hoping that my Appfuse Struts basic application - getting into details - The security series would have some hits, they actually did but not as expected. More general interest ones were the most successful, for example, Snapshot plugin on Blogger, Cross platform browser test or How to use SyntaxHighlighter on Blogger which was the only one who received a (positive) comment.
I wasn't discouraged by this, after all, my blog's first purpose is to serve as a reference for myself.
Some time ago, I came across this interesting post, http://webinky.com/resources/tips-to-write-a-popular-post-in-dzone, talking about some basic principles to get more popular when writing for the web and using DZone to spread the word. Most of the tips are common sense and applies basic principles of journalism (e.g. catchy titles):
- Offer Freebies
- Use catchy words in the title
- Write about Google
- Write about Java or its related technologies
- Write about a new technology
- Write about DZone itself
Follow the aforementioned post to find examples for all these principles.

I thought to give it a shot, and so I started my four DZone experiments, first by writing an article combining two of the tips, Catchy title and offering "freebies": 13 templates resources for the not superstitious programmer. It seems the title wasn't so appealing after all, I only got 40 unique page views for this one, but I tend to blame this on the fact that the "market" is overheated by this kind of articles offering free templates or similar things. But I still like my title...

The opportunity for the second experiment came while surfing for some Grails Plugins, I was going to write some post about "Top 5 Grails Plugin that I'm going to use in my next web project" (I'm still going to do it). Visiting the www.grails.org site, I noticed their design change, and I quickly wrote New outstanding Grails Homepage design, using three of the principles: catchy words in the title ("Outstanding"), write about Java or its related technologies and write about a new technology. The results were as expected, the post is #3 in the Top Content section of my Google Analytics account, with 447 Page Views, 336 unique ones. Not bad! I even received 12 Up Votes from DZone readers and also some comment activity. You can check this here http://www.dzone.com/links/new_outstanding_grails_homepage_design.html.
The content is not so rich in this one but indeed, a good title on a good subject about a new, in-demand technology can do the trick. Also, being the first writing about some popular subject helps a lot.

For third experiment, I was thinking to write something about Google. So, it was perfect timing when I received my Wave Sandbox membership request. The chance for such a subject to be a hit was high, especially when combined with the attractive title technique: Google Wave Sandbox Access Granted - The Revolution is starting! and the numbers don't lie. This article is number 2 on Analytics Top Content table, with 606 page views, 558 unique ones. (First position in the list is the blog itself) It even was the first item on DZone listing for a couple of hours.

At that time, I didn't understand why it was the first since it wasn't the most visited but a friend of mine noticed that it was the article with the highest growth of views and clicks in a time period. So, my mystery of how the blogs are sorted by DZone is now solved (thanks to Herr Buior). It was a Big Link, as they name it the email that I just received:
"BurcaCiprian,
Thank you for being a valuable participant at DZone. Your link titled 'Google Wave Sandbox Access Granted - The Revolution is starting!' was a DZone Big Link on 07/30.
Click here to view your link: http://www.dzone.com/links/google_wave_sandbox_access_granted_the_revolution.html
The link has been tweeted automatically. You can see it here: http://twitter.com/dzone. Be sure to retweet it from your account to make it even bigger.

"
There is something worth speaking of here. When you use a catchy title and of course not just then, you have to provide quality content. In this post, I was just announcing that I received an email from Google, and I think the visitors are expecting more than this when following something like "The revolution is starting". I guess this is the cause that I also received 5 down votes together with the 9 Up votes and only one comment directly on the home page.

You can check here the current status of the link.
The fourth experiment is...well...this post. If you are reading this you are part of it (don't give me Down Votes because of this :) ). I'm writing about DZone,
I have a (hopefully) captivating title, and I also provide some good content, in my opinion. I expect to double my hits with this post and if so, the experiment will succeed. One possible problem is that the weekend is coming, and it seems that in this period of the week people have other preoccupations. This is also something worth watching.
Another thing that I want to observe is the above mentioned links will get additional visits after including them here, and I also want to repeat all these steps using some other blog aggregating sites, I'm waiting for feedback and suggestions about this.
Until then here is the screenshot from Google Analytics proving what I stated here. Thank you all for being part of my investigation. I'll get back soon with the conclusions.

New outstanding Grails Homepage design

,

Most of the Grails fans out there know that "On November 11, 2008, SpringSource announced that it acquired G2One Inc., the company behind the popular Groovy and Grails technologies". Today, I noticed that the Grails homepage, available at http://grails.org/ has a new, beautiful design. It contains the SpringSource branding but also a brand new color scheme, based on SpringSource's logo colors. Outstanding design! What do you think?

13 templates resources for the not superstitious programmer

,
My graphic design skills are almost nonexistent so whenever I have to implement a new site, I'm usually utilizing a pre-made template obtained either from sites or blogs that supply free template services or, in some cases, paid ones. I have surfed the internet for hours for the perfect designs, now I have a list of locations where I quickly look for what I need. There are a lot of sites and blogs posts out there aggregating the best of the free designs, it is now time to share mine:

My top 8 sites:

1. http://www.styleshout.com/ - Quality over quantity, it is one of my personal favourites because of their clean style. Provides both sites and blog templates, paid services are also available. They are ranked #2 in this top.

2. http://www.solucija.com/free-templates - "...These are free XHTML / CSS website templates available to use without any limitations. They can be used on a noncommercial site as well as on a commercial one. Keeping a small credit link in the footer is not obligatory but shows your appreciation and support. All templates are hand coded and lightweight (under 60KB) which ensures fast loading..."

3. http://web-kreation.com/index.php/freebies/#templates - provides a small number of templates but the this guy has style! Some
other freebies are available.

4. http://www.templateworld.com/ - one of the classics. You only need time to browse the collection.

5. http://www.freewebtemplates.com/ - currently offering 5311 free and premium templates.

6. http://csscreme.com/freecsstemplates/p/2/ - top site with css themes.

7. http://www.oswd.org/ - I know this one from a long time but it seems that they stopped updating the site. Still, you can find some useful stuff there.

8. http://themeforest.net/ - they have top quality premium templates, well categorized. They offer sites, blogger,
wordpress, psd and joomla templates. Easy to browse, preview and pay via PayPal.

Reclame super :)

,
